Log Construction Types

Two Ways We Build with Logs

Each construction style has its own look, its own joinery method, and its own character. Here’s what to know about each one before you decide.

D-Log construction style
Most Common

D-Log Construction

The D-log is milled from full round logs — flat on the inside, rounded on the outside. It gives you that classic log cabin exterior while making the interior easier to finish and insulate. Most of our portable cabins and kits use D-log construction. It’s the practical choice without sacrificing the look.

  • Clean, flat interior wall — easier to hang shelves, cabinets, and fixtures
  • Rounded exterior gives the full log cabin look
  • Superior insulation performance over full round
  • Most popular option across our portable and kit lines
  • Widely available in multiple diameter sizes
  • Faster build times due to consistent milling

Premium Craft

Dovetail Joinery

Hand-cut dovetail corners are the hallmark of fine log craftsmanship. Each corner is individually notched to fit — no two corners are exactly alike. The result is a structurally superior joint and a cabin that looks like it was built by someone who cared. Because it was.

  • Each corner is hand-cut and individually fitted on site
  • Mechanically interlocking joint — no nails, bolts, or pins at the corners
  • Structurally superior to conventional notch methods
  • No two cabins are exactly alike — truly one of a kind
  • Naturally accounts for log settling over time
  • Built to outlast generations — these corners only get tighter with age
Roof Options

Rooflines & Pitches

Roofline choice affects both the look of your cabin and its practical performance — particularly snow load in Northern Idaho winters. Here’s what we offer.

Standard Gable

The most common roofline. Clean symmetry, good pitch for snow shed, and easy to build. Works with every cabin style we offer. The practical choice.

Steep Pitch Gable

A higher pitch for maximum snow shedding and a more dramatic look. Common on mountain builds where winter snow load is a primary concern. Adds interior loft potential.

Porch Extensions

A covered porch added to the front, back, or side of any model. Extends your usable outdoor space and adds significant visual character to the cabin.
